MTC191 Electronic Music I 3 Credits
An introduction to creating music with computers, utilizing the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) protocol, synthesizers, digital audio software/hardware, and MIDI controllers. Prerequisites: None.

Notes: Live Online classes have sessions that meet online on specific days and times. Attendance in these sessions will be at the discretion of the instructor, and additional work will be required on the student’s own time. Access to a computer or mobile device with Internet connection is required. Before enrolling in their first online class at MCC, students need to view the online orientation and complete the readiness survey on https://www.mesacc.edu/online/get-started for additional information.

The course fee will be waived or refunded so that students can apply it towards purchasing the Reason 11 Intro software and hardware listed below. Equipment requirements listed below are the responsibility of the student to purchase before class begins. Reason 11 Intro $99 download for Mac or PC—can be found at https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/product/reason-11-intro/ Any USB MIDI Controller Keyboard (full-sized piano keys recommended) Any Mac Computer with Intel Core i5 or higher, 8GB RAM or more (16GB recommended) with OS X 10.11 or later. OR: Any PC with Intel Core i5 / AMD Athlon X4 or higher, 8GB RAM or more (16GB recommended) with Windows 7 SP1 or later. Ability to playback and record audio: can be headphones or external speakers While in a live on-line classroom, background sound from speakers can be disruptive and create feedback. Please use headphones as if you were in the DAW Lab on the MCC campus. Any External USB or Firewire preferred If not external, computer must have a LINE IN and HEADPHONE/SPEAKER out. Virtual Meeting Software: Capability to participate in a virtual classroom environment via free, readily available software like Zoom, Webex, or our MCCCD platforms. MTC192 Electronic Music II 3 Credits
Continued study of creating music with computers, utilizing the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) configurations, audio editing, and music software/hardware at the intermediate level. Emphasis on more complex configurations and their applications in compositions. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in MTC191.
