Profile

Dr. Melissa Carpenter (she/her/ella) has over 20 years of experience in education. She has worked at Mesa Community College since 2001. She currently serves as the Foundations for Student Success director at MCC and she also teaches part-time for the Counseling and English departments. She has a doctorate in education from the Organizational Change and Leadership program at the University of Southern California. She earned a master’s degree in Comparative Literature from Arizona State University and a bachelor’s degree in English from Brigham Young University. Before working in education, Dr. Carpenter had a short career as a journalist. 

Dr. Carpenter enjoys spending time in the outdoors (hiking, running, and biking). She has lived in Arizona for most of her life and has raised three children here. She loves to travel, read or listen to audio books, and take photographs. She likes team sports and has recently learned to play pickleball. She is fairly fluent in oral and written Spanish. She has been fortunate to live abroad for short periods of time in both El Salvador and England.

 

Classes Taught

Spring 2024

ENG102 First-Year Composition 3 Credits

Emphasis on rhetoric and composition with a focus on persuasive, research-based writing and understanding writing as a process. Developing advanced college-level writing strategies through three or more writing projects comprising at least 4,000 words in total.

Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in ENG101.

Course Notes: Due to the possibility of last-minute schedule changes, students are encouraged to attend the first class meeting before purchasing the textbook.
