Profile
As a former student of Mesa Community College, I have been honored to be a part of this community again as a faculty member. It was here at MCC that I found my academic intellegence. I was a non-typical aged student who rebelled for quite some time against the norm and then was affected deeply by tragedy in my life that changed me in a weirdly positive way.
After my period of grief - about 3 years - I came to MCC as an energized and excited "youth" passionate to learn and discover about my own curiousities. It was in my chemistry class that I first had a glimpse of the awesomeness that science really was and learned so much. I was hooked. I swiftly changed majors to engineering thinking that I would wind up doing environmental/chemistry/engineering, ha. I hadn't even known that I was good at math, and in reality, I am not that "good at it" but I know how to work hard by slowing down and using my resources. That ability to slow down and ask for help is one of the key qualities that has helped me in my life in general.
I acknowledge that I have had it much easier than others. I come from a family of academics and engineers and pilots. I was never poor. I was never racially profiled. I was profiled because I was a bit weird and socially awkward and a girl, but not because of my skin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. I have been an advocate and an ally though and have watched actual racism, sexism, and homophobia played out in sometimes violent ways. I say this because I worked super hard for what I have achieved, but some of our students (you) will have to work so much harder than I ever had because of the need to overcome social, economic, cultural, and historical barriers.
My message to you is don't struggle alone. There is no need to do that in a supportive community such as Mesa Community College. If someone treats you unfairly, then find someone else that does treat you fairly. If your instructor is not responding to you and seems unsupportive, contact their chair. They will not get in trouble but they will be coached and helped to ensure that you are getting the support you need.
There is much more to say about my experience and my degree so I will list some here:
- Bachelors in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics from Grand Canyon University
- Secondary Math Teaching certificate
- Universal Design for Learning student and practioner
- Former Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Course Coordinator at Chandler-Gilbert Community College
- Former Canvas LMS administrator
- Former Web Designer for multiple individuals, offices, and businesses.
- Mom of three boys
- Volunteer with middle schoolers
- Volunteer in recovery groups for adult addicts
Please reach out to talk more or make an appointment to meet. I am here to support your goals!
