FYE103 Exploration of College, Career and Personal Success 3 Credits

Focus on student success through exploration of academic, career, and life skills. Includes study of goal-setting/success strategies, academic mindset, interpersonal skills, financial literacy, self-care strategies, diverse perspectives, and campus tools and resources. Develop an education/career plan utilizing career assessments and other college resources.

Prerequisites: None.

BHS150 Introduction to Behavioral Health and Social Services 3 Credits

Survey of the behavioral health and social services professions, including scope of practice and training requirements. Exploration of employment opportunities in the field and self-assessment/academic planning for a career in mental health. Overview of mental health disorders and first responder skills in a mental health crisis situation. Prerequisites: None.

Course Notes: Approved by AzPost for 40 hours of continual education. Meets requirements for 40 hours by the AzBBHE. Students who pass the exam with 80% or more will be eligible for a 3-year certification in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). Certification requires 8 hours of in-person training.

BHS155 Professional Resiliency and Well-Being 3 Credits

Exploration of building human resilience and well-being to prevent burnout, traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue for social services and mental health professionals, healthcare providers, emergency first responders, and other relationship-intense occupations. Causes, symptoms, and effects of traumatic stress, burnout compassion fatigue and other work-related stress. Focus on enhancing quality of life and improving a healthy lifestyle by incorporating evidenced-based practices in psychological and emotional resilience training, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, positive psychology, prevention, peer support, and self-care, including nutrition, exercise, and sleep.

Prerequisites: None.

Course Notes: Students who pass the class and the final exam with 80% or more will be eligible to become a Certified Professional Resilience Technician (c-RPT), Certified Mindfulness-Informed Technician (c-MIT), and Self-Care Technician (c-SCT) with the National Institute of Behavioral Medicine and a Certified Resilience Professional (CRP) with the Trauma Institute International, see: https://traumainstituteinternational.com/certifications/.
